In this post, I will summarize chapter 15, pages 233-239 of "The Wisdom of Your Child's Face" by Jean Haner, where the author provides insights into how parents can better understand and support their child's unique personality. This chapter explores the public and private emotional landscape by paying attention to the subtle differences in facial features.
The right and left sides of a child's face can provide valuable insights into their personality and inner emotions. The right side is considered the "public" side and reveals the parts of their personality they show to the world, while the left side is the "private" side and displays their deeper emotions and character traits. The left side of the face is controlled by the right half of the brain, which is the home of emotions. On the other hand, the right side of the face is controlled by the left brain, which deals with logic and linear thinking.
Research has shown that the left side of a person's face is more expressive than the right, as it reveals more of their emotions, and people tend to look at the right side of another person's face while speaking to them, which masks their private nature.
For example, a mother noticed a difference in her daughter's eyebrows, with her right eyebrow rounded ( suggesting a willingness to please others ). Still, her left one was shaped more like an upside-down V ( indicating a tendency to react quickly and emotionally). Despite her daughter's public display of willingness to please others, the mother discovered her friends' behavior deeply hurt her and would privately sob and express her emotional world.
The Three Zones: Children's faces can be divided into three horizontal zones, revealing their thinking style, decision-making process, learning preferences, and, most importantly, their desires and needs for their growth.
If one zone is significantly larger than the others, it represents a dominant way of thinking and making decisions.
The Analytical Zone:
Children with a dominant Analytical Zone tend to be less spontaneous, prefer to evaluate things carefully and enjoy researching details. They tend to rely heavily on their minds, and as a result, they may spend too much time considering all possible options, details, and consequences. This can make it difficult for them to make a decision and move forward.
The Practical Zone:
Children with dominant Practical Zones prefer hands-on learning and are more focused on what is practical and efficient. If they have short foreheads, this enhances the need for on-the-job training. On the other hand, children with high foreheads may tend to overthink and overthink things. They may place too much emphasis on taking action, potentially neglecting other people's feelings and the finer details of a situation to make more well-rounded decisions.
The Intuitive Zone:
Children with a dominant intuitive zone will make decisions based on gut instincts rather than analysis or practicality. While they may act before thinking things through completely, their sixth sense is often correct. However, their emotions can also influence their decisions too often, making it difficult to fit into the typical classroom structure that values linear thinking. Parents may need to advocate for their children and help the teacher understand how they learn best.
Note: It is best not to rely too much on these zones for young children because their faces are wider than high, and their noses and jaw fully develop once they progress through elementary school.
For example, a couple's children chose a shopping mall with a theme park as a monthly treat and spent the day there. The father reported that their practical son found coupons for the rides, and their analytical daughter researched the mall. She made a list of what she wanted, and their intuitive son immediately went to the play area without any preparations. All of them had a great time.
The parents in this story observed that their children had unique and distinct styles, and they respected and accepted these differences instead of trying to impose their own ways of functioning. If a particular zone is more prominent in your child, acknowledge their strengths in that area and provide support. If a zone is weaker, understand that it's not a significant part of their interests, and it's okay to let it be.
How a child's face is divided vertically or horizontally is less important than understanding their life journey. In chapters 16-19, you will learn how to help your child navigate life by accepting and embracing their natural tendencies.

This is fascinating. Last week I was thinking about the fact that during birth one side of the infants face is pushed against the coccyx/sacrum bone during labor and makes one half of the face slightly lower than the other. When I look at adults I can always tell which side that was. Absolutely love this information. Looking forward to more posts. 🥰💙🔥
